Writer, director producer, Ava DuVernay has garnered a reputation for her poignant and thoughtful storytelling style. Her upcoming drama, Middle of Nowhere, possesses all the ingredients that are hallmarks of her earlier work.
The film examines a young woman, Ruby (Emayatzy Corinealdi), who has to cope when her husband is sentenced to 8 years in prison, she drops out of med school in order to focus on her husband’s well being while he’s incarcerated – leading her on a journey of self-discovery in the process.
DuVernay’s follow-up to her modest hit, I Will Follow, finds her once again exploring intimate, personal stories that are solidily written and brilliantly executed by the celebrated former P.R. executive. Which studio will be the first to embrace this talented auteur and strike a deal that provides major distribution for her impressive work?
The winner of the Directing Award for U.S. Dramatic Film at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, the film stars Corinealdi, making her big screen debut, Sharon Lawrence, David Oyelowo, Dondre Whitfield, Omari Hardwick, Maya Gilbert, and Lorraine Toussaint.
