Reel Shorts | The Avengers

4 05 2012

Nick Fury, director of S.H.I.E.L.D., recruits Iron Man, Captain America, the Hulk and Thor to form a team that must stop Thor’s adoptive brother Loki from subjugating the Earth in the superhero extravaganza, The Avengers.

After four years of studious planning including teaser trailers and TONS of hype and buzz, director Joss Whedon manages a feat few of his peers have ever equaled, successfully bringing together several high-profile characters in an entertaining crowd-pleaser.

The film doesn’t have the most complex story but compensates with a wonderful script, amazing special effects and great performances from its talented cast. Director Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) encounters a powerful force coming straight out of Asgard in the villainous Loki (Tom Hiddleston) who declares war on the humans, whom he also wants to rule. A fine plan indeed except that Fury has other ideas and activates the Avengers initiative which includes Iron Man, Captain America, The Hulk and Thor to stop Loki and his army.

In addition to strong performances by Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Scarlet Johannsen, Hiddleston and Jackson, the film’s true surprise is Mark Ruffalo who excels as the Hulk. Marvel has attempted to make films around the agitated green men in two past movies but finally has gotten the tone correct in this latest version. Writer/director Whedon does a masterful job of not only understanding each character but their relationship and connection to each other.

In the midst of a renaissance of superhero stories, The Avengers is on par with some of the platinum titles, including The Dark Knight, Spider-Man 2, The X-Men: First Class and the original Superman. An absolutely superb film that not only lives up to but surpasses all of the hype!
