Five Favs Comic Book Movies

1 10 2010

The recent success of “Kick-Ass” and the release of “Iron Man 2” on DVD, films based on comic books have become Hollywood’s gold standard for success. With a slew of high-profile films coming to theaters in the near future, we take a look at Five Fav Comic Book movies featuring African-Americans heroes and heroines fighting bad guys and saving the world – on the big screen!

Wanted (2008)

Oscar winning actor Morgan Freeman is Sloan who heads a secret order of assassins called The Fraternity in this stylish action thriller based on the comic book series by Mark Millar. Co-starring James McAvoy, Angelina Jolie and Common, the story of a frustrated office worker who discovers his true calling is a fun thrill romp with wall-to-wall action!

Money line: “Welcome… to the Fraternity. This gun you’re holding belonged to your father; he could conduct a symphony orchestra with it.”

Men In Black (1997)

One year after Will Smith left his hit TV show, “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” and co-starred in the blockbuster, he shot to superstardom saving the world from aliens as a part of an elite unit in this smash hit film. With a beautiful wife and two children working in the industry, Smith has become one of the biggest movie stars in the world – and reportedly will star as the President in the upcoming “Independence Day” sequels!

Money line: “You know the difference between you and me? I make this look good.”

Blade (1998)

Prior to the current vampire craze, Wesley Snipes launched a successful action franchise as a daywalker and vampire slayer in three hit films. Snipes, who was in discussions with Marvel to play the “Black Panther,” beat out both Laurence Fishburne and Denzel Washington for the title role.

Money line: “You better wake up. The world you live in is just a sugar-coated topping! There is another world beneath it – the real world. And if you wanna survive it, you better learn to pull the trigger!”

Spawn (1997)

Michael Jai White starred as former mercenary who comes back from the grave to head the devil’s army in this well done action thriller based on the comic book by Todd McFarlane. Before White was cast in the title role, other actors considered for the role included Wesley Snipes, Snoop Dogg and . . . Danny Glover!

Money line: “You sent me to Hell, Jason! I’m here to return the favor!”

Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight (1995)

Jada Pinkett-Smith plays a heroine who decides the ultimate battle between good and evil in this movie based on the successful TV show. Smith, who also starred in “Low Down Dirty Shame” and “Jason’s Lyric,” ironically auditioned for the role of future husband Will’s show seven years before they were married. She lost the role to Nia Long reportedly because she was too short!

Money line: “Humans. You’re not worth the flesh you’re printed on!”
