Sneak Peek | Watchmen

22 02 2009

In less than two weeks, the movie event of 2009 will drop in theaters. Last year, Warner Bros. delivered on all of the hype with “The Dark Knight,” will the “Watchmen” follow suit?

Director Zack Snyder takes audiences behind the scenes and for many who never read the celebrated graphic novel, helps decipher just what this phenomenon is all about. While nobody is expecting this film to be “Knighted,” there are several things that could be put in motion if this film explodes.

With director Christopher Nolan publicly claiming that he will walk away from his new and reinvigorated “Batman” franchise after the third film and Warner Bros. wanting to treat the franchise like “Harry Potter,” another huge film from Snyder (“300”) could make him the clear frontrunner to takeover Nolan’s director seat for that series. In addition, Marvel Comics’ grip on hot comics could also be in jeopardy if the WB keeps winning the box office battle. Many people forget that Marvel released two successful films last year, “Iron Man” and “The Incredible Hulk” – and the “The Dark Knight” smoked them both!

The only reason Marvel and it’s legendary group of comic superheroes are still somewhat in the game is because Warner Bros. still haven’t fixed their biggest potential money-maker, “Superman.” Word on the street is that Nolan’s work has Warner’s suit again going to the drawing board, maybe dropping that Brandon Routh-zero and rebooting the series all together. A recent confidential report stated that the next installment may be, “Superman Unleashed!”

All that is talk for another day and what must be keeping Marvel up at night is the thought of another special effects cinematic bonanza that could have movie turnstiles spinning up till the start of the summer season. All we can say is “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” BETTER be hot!
