In less than three weeks, DC Comics will roll out THE Event film of the summer, “The Dark Knight.” With no disrespect to “Iron Man,” “The Incredible Hulk,” “Hancock” or “Hellboy 2: The Golden Army,” the Batman brand is one of the strongest of all in the world of comics.

Four over four decades, DC Comics has given us images of a conflicted superhero who dresses like a bat fighting crime. From our earliest memories, Adam West was the Caped Crusader battling villains such as “The Joker,” “The Riddler,” “The Penguin” and “Catwoman” among others. Those epic battles made their debut on the silver screen in the late 1980s with a series of darker Tim Burton-directed films that were more notable for the men in the suit (Michael Keaton, George Clooney and Val Kilmer), artist on the soundtrack (Prince) and questionable Bat-fashion (remember the cod piece and bat-nipples?).

After those initial movies evolved into expensive guest-star villains (Arnold Schwarzenegger, Uma Thurman and Jim Carrey) and seemed to be in demise, the series was resurrected in 2005 with wildly successful film, “Batman Begins,” which featured a darker more realistic tone. If the hype for “The Dark Knight” wasn’t hot enough, the unfortunate passing of co-star Heath Ledger as well as the advance critique of his intense performance, was enough to send film fans into laser-hot orbit.

While Marvel Comics has released two hit films with combined grosses of over $825 million, worldwide, history indicates that if film is really well-received it could be in for a huge payday. The initial “Batman” film reeled in $411 million in 1989. “The Dark Knight” could be poised for not only a volcanic opening, but is poised to be the most successful film of the franchise.

Time will tell!

Make sure to check out additional images from “The Dark Knight.”
