I’ve been watching this trailer for several months and I still don’t know what to make of it. The film entitled, “Cloverfield” tells the story of a group of New Yorkers who are terrorized by an unseen monster that apparently is pretty big. Produced by J.J. Abrams (“Alias”) and starring a cast of unknowns its clear that the success of this film is about how its marketed and the shock value once butts are sitting in the theater seats.
Hollywood has used the “mystery” plotline successfully in films like “The Blair Witch Project” and films boasting film-altering twists such as “The Sixth Sense” and “The Usual Suspects.” The jury is still out on this film that could be an early season surprise or an over-hyped disaster. This is clearly a case of “time will tell.”
“Cloverfield” opens in theaters on January 18
