I’m really confused by this film. Several years ago, the same filmmakers produced a brilliant crime epic spanning three decades in the slums of Rio de Janeiro. The area is known as “The City of God,” and the film examined the rise of crime boss Lil’ Ze who grows up to be the largest gangster the city had ever seen.
This latest film appears to just focus on the relationship between that same character and his partner who grew up as close friends, but became as close as brothers.
I wonder why the same filmmakers would make a story so similar to the original film. From looking at the trailer, the story maintains its raw and urgent sense of violence and justice on the blood streets of Rio.
“City of Men” comes to theaters January 18.
