It appears that the uneasy truce between actors and rapper/singers may again be threatened. The latest actor to speak out against “entertainment carpetbaggers” who challenges an “unnamed singer” to fall back and play her position.
In the latest issue of U.K. magazine, Pride, Long lashes out about singers who have not honed their craft taking jobs away from classically trained actors. Of course, Long didn’t bite her tongue.
“I didn’t see ‘Obsessed,’ so I can’t comment, but it’s just not about how talented you are anymore. It’s about, ‘How much box-office revenue will this person generate?’ When you see certain people – we won’t name names – they just don’t have the skill, and no one in their team has said, ‘You need acting classes.”
Several years ago, Samuel L. Jackson reportedly refuse to work with rappers who he felt didn’t take the craft as seriously as he. With so many major actors who have crossed over from music and comedy, Jennifer Hudson, Eddie Murphy, Jamie Foxx, Mos Def, Queen Latifah and Will Smith should actors continue to take offense at the encroachment of their art or should they just accept the new reality and look for opportunities to increase their own revenue streams?
Nia is sounding a little bitter. BUT… She speaks the truth! It IS all about box office receipts.
Never mind ‘Obsessed’, who thought it was a good idea to cast Beyonce as Etta James? Bey can sing her ass off and I’d drink a tub of Matthew’s bath water just for a chance to LIFIRID (… Rub It Down), but she wasn’t able to convey Etta’s tortured soul. A pretty face, an angel’s voice and a vicious body will carry you a long way but it doesn’t guarantee the appreciation of your peers. Beyonce can’t ACT and acting lessons wouldn’t help much.
However, the other actors listed are ACTORS and quite talented.
Who shot that magazine cover? They should be fired!
nia who??
