Two years ago, Beyonce Knowles watched her co-star Jennifer Hudson give a triumphant performance and take home Oscar gold in the musical “Dreamgirls.” In her latest film, Knowles hangs her award hopes playing blues legend Etta James in the upcoming musical drama, “Cadillac Records.
The film which is based on the true story of the rise of 1950’s Chess Records and it’s stable of colorful stars. Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters and James were huge stars of the company that pre-dated Berry Gordy’s influential Motown Records.
Co-starring Jeffrey Wright, Mos Def, Gabrielle Union, Knowles and Adrien Brody, the trailer looks engaging and entertaining. With so few legitimate award hopefuls coming out later this year, “Cadillac Records” could either be a pleasant surprise or just another of the holiday season’s “great pretenders.”
“Cadillac Records” opens in theaters December 5.
